Earthling Obon Gathering at The Greenhouse

With my desktop computer out of order and many names and addresses inaccessible, it has become difficult to organise an Obon Gathering this year, but we will have one anyway at The Greenhouse. Several DJs , including one of my all time favourites, R1 (Richie Morgan) have expressed interest in playing, and some live musicians as well.

コンピューターの不調によりアドレス帳にある皆様の名前や住所がアクセスできないため、今年のお盆の集いをオーガナイズするのが難しい現状ですが、それにもかかわらずグリーンハウスで行う事にしています。私のお気に入りのDJ、R1(リッチー・モーガン）を含めたDJ達やライブミュージシャン幾人かも出演予定です。

Let's just say that during the Obon Holidays, Aug 12-15 being the main period, but before and after also OK, friends will be welcome to stay at the Greenhouse if they will make a contribution of at least 1000 yen for the first evening and 500 for subsequent ones, and buy their food and drinks here (not bringing their own or going out to eat). There will be trips to onsens and, depending on the weather,swimming in the nearby lake.

お盆休暇の８月１２－１５日、またその前後でも友達の皆様ぜひグリーンハウスにいらっしゃい。
宿泊最初の晩は１０００円以上、二晩目からは５００円以上の寄付をしていただき、飲食はここグリーンハウスからおもとめ（飲食物持参や外食は避けて）下さい。温泉や、天気が良ければ近くの湖で泳いだり、と外出も予定されています。

The schedule will be freeform and spontaneous, with only as much organisation as is necessary to keep people from being bored or hungry. There will be no guests -- everybody is staff, and can probably find some way to help make things run smoothly.

DJChris Classical Concert Mix

One of the most interesting DJ gigs I have had was when I was invited to perform with the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert hall in Tokyo. Three DJs were asked to perform live, mixing whatever they chose together with the orchestra. I cannot remember the names of the other two DJs at the moment, but the three classical pieces chosen were a Satie "Gymnopedie", Ravel's "Pavanne Pur Une Enfante Defunte" and, in my case, the prelude to Wagner's opera "Parsifal". I'll post that track later.

I was asked to do a DJ mix during the intermission, which lasted for about 50 minutes. I chose pieces of electronica which I thought might appeal to people who appreciated classical music, namely works of interestingly complex polyphony or harmony. I also mixed in quite a few samples and extended pieces from the classical repertoire. The resultant mix includes pieces by Gurdjieff, Alquimia, The Irresistible Force, Future Sound of London, Monteverdi, Richard Strauss, Pete Namlook and Beethoven,among others.

Among the more successful blends, in my opinion, were the Monteverdi soprano duet "Venite, venite" over a rolling piece whose name I have forgotten, and the final mix of Namlook's "Silence" with the slow movement of Beethoven's last string quartet. The Schwarzkopf sample from Strauss' "Morgen" works pretty well too, I think.

See how you like it. I recommend a fairly high volume, as some of the pieces project a vast soundscape.....

This year the peak of autumn colour is a bit later than usual, and so the EarthlingZ Kouyou Gathering will be from the afternoon of Sat Nov 20th until the evening of Tue Nov 23rd, which is a National Holiday.

This year we will have a free Open House from Aug 13 - 16. Friends are invited to visit and stay for a while, and will only be expected to pay for food and drinks. I will be stocking up on delicious food supplies, so please do not bring your own. This is the only source of funds to cover expenses for the event.

２０１０年グリーンハウスのゴールデンウイークの集い

Every year since The Greenhouse began, there has been a multi-day gathering at Golden Week. This year also it is planned to have an Open House gathering from 1-4 May, but since there is so much work to be done between now and late May, and since several of the people who have helped prepare parties in the past are unable to participate this year, I am not confident of being able to get everything ready in time for a full-on party.
グリーンハウスが始まって以来毎年ゴールデンウイークの集いがありました。今年も５月１日～４日オープンハウスの　集いを予定してますが今から５月下旬までする事がたくさんあり前に手伝ってくれた人達が今年は参加出来なく私自身パーテイに間に合う様に全部準備出来るかどうか自信ありません。

Projects at the Greenhouse for this year include a large increase in the amount of growing of vegetables and herbs, using new equipment and techniques for a self-regulating watering system. Since there is so little flat land around the Greenhouse, emphasis is on vegetables and herbs that are not generally available in Japan, and on climbing plants such as squashes of many sorts that can use the vertical spaces.
今年のグリーンハウスのプロジェクトは新しいやりかたでの自動的な散水方法で育てる野菜、ハーブの大いなる増加が含まれてます。グリーンハウスの近くには平たい土地が少ないので野菜、ハーブは普通日本で育てられてるのでなく蔓　植物例えば垂直面を利用出来る色々な瓜等です。

Unfortunately the unusually cold and rainy weather of the last 2 months has delayed the work of preparing the garden and planting, which is now almost at the stage of transplanting seedlings from the hothouse to outdoors. It has also slowed down the spring cleaning much needed by The Greenhouse.
残念にも過去２ヶ月の寒くて雨っぽい気候がガーデニング、プランテイングを遅らせ今が温室から戸外に植え替える時期です。又グリーンハウスの春の掃除を遅らせました。

So what I am suggesting is that this year's Golden Week Gathering will be even less structured than usual. It will be more like visiting the Greenhouse on ordinary days, when things are going on. People who come will be asked to buy their food, but not to pay for the music and accommodation other than by giving as much help as they feel like.
私が言ってるのは今年のゴールデンウイークの集いは普通よりもっと決まってません。色々な事がおこってて普通の日　にグリーンハウスを訪ねる様な感じです。食べ物は買ってもらいますが手伝いしたいだけ手伝ってくれて音楽、宿泊は払わなくていいです。

Light garden work will continue, some upgrading maintenance of the facilities, processing and labeling ginger candy,incense, essential oils, etc., and probably a major bread-making session and other cooking projects. Of course, there will be music most of the time, and the contributions by live performers will be appreciated. Several have already been invited, and others who let me know in time for me to announce their intent to perform will be given some free EarthlingZ money to pay for meals, etc.
簡単なガーデニングの仕事、設備の格上げ保持、生姜キャンデイー、エセンシャルオイル等のラベル付けーーおそらく　パン作り、料理があるでしょう。もちろん音楽ライブ演奏等もあるでしょう。何人かは招待されましたが他の人でのライブはアースリングマネー等考えてるので間に合う様知らせて下さい .

Also, since I am growing more seedlings than I have space to plant, there will be extra seedlings of interesting vegetables available for people who would like to grow some themselves.
又自分が育てる以上の苗があるので育てたい人達には興味ある苗があります。

So if you're interested in hanging out in the springtime countryside while doing interesting things and hearing music, please do attend. Children and the kind of dogs who don't eat cats are welcome.
興味ある事したり音楽を聞いたりしながら春の田舎を楽しみたいならどうか参加して下さい。
子供と犬（猫を食べ物としない）は歓迎です。

１２月３日の秩父夜祭りの花火は世界でも壮観の一つです。何時間もの非常に編曲された花火が経験した者でないとわからないナチュラルハイで夜空に輝　きます。何千人もの人が週末でもないのに東京から見に来ます。

Here's the plan:　プラン

People who come to the Greenhouse during the day on Thursday should be here before 6:30 if they wish to ride with us into Chichibu. Alternatively, we can meet in Chichibu.

木曜日に一緒に車で秩父に行きたい人は６時半までにグリーンハウスに来て下さい。　または秩父で会う事が出来ます。

At the top of one of the narrow roads lined with yatai there is a small temple just below the hill from which the fireworks are launched.

屋台が並んでいる狭い道路の上、花火が発火される丘の下に小さいお寺があります。

We will meet around the junction of roads in front of the temple. If you do not see us there, phone 090-5311-1614 to find out where we are.

　お寺の前の交差している道、辺りで会いましょう。

After the fireworks display, which runs from about 7:30 until 10 or so, we will return to the Greenhouse for snacks and music.

COSTS: Instead of charging any admission to The Greenhouse, we will simply ask for contributions when you leave. Food will be available a la carte -- tasty snacks in the evening, and breakfast/brunch in the morning.

Many lovers of Indian music in Japan know about Shen Flindell, the Australian tabla player and teacher who visits Japan every year to perform across the country, and occasionally offer lessons.

Waste Not, Want Not

We've finally reached a point where we can't keep hyperconsuming—and that's a good thing.

ONCE A YEAR OR SO, it's my turn to run recycling day for our tiny town. Saturday morning, 9 to 12, a steady stream of people show up to sort out their plastics (No. 1, No. 2, etc.), their corrugated cardboard (flattened, please), their glass (and their returnable glass, which goes to benefit the elementary school), their Styrofoam peanuts, their paper, their cans. It's quite satisfying—everything in its place.

But it's also kind of disturbing, this waste stream. For one, a town of 550 sure generates a lot—a trailer load every couple of weeks. Sometimes you have to put a kid into the bin and tell her to jump up and down so the lid can close.

More than that, though, so much of it seems utterly unnecessary. Not just waste, but wasteful. Plastic water bottles, one after another—80 million of them get tossed every day. The ones I'm stomping down are being "recycled," but so what? In a country where almost everyone has access to clean drinking water, they define waste to begin with. I mean, you don't have a mug? In fact, once you start thinking about it, the category of "waste" begins to expand, until it includes an alarming percentage of our economy. Let's do some intellectual sorting:

There's old-fashioned waste, the dangerous, sooty kind. You're making something useful, but you're not using the latest technology, and so you're spewing: particulates into the air, or maybe sewage into the water. You wish to keep doing it, because it's cheap, and you block any regulation that might interfere with your right to spew. This is the kind of waste that's easy to attack; it's obvious and obnoxious and a lot of it falls under the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act and so on. There's actually less of this kind of waste than there used to be—that's why we can swim in most of our rivers again.

There's waste that comes from everything operating as it should, only too much so. If carbon monoxide (carbon with one oxygen atom) exemplifies pollution of the first type, then carbon dioxide (carbon with two oxygen atoms) typifies the second. Carbon monoxide poisons you in your garage and turns Beijing's air brown, but if you put a catalytic converter on your tailpipe it all but disappears. Carbon dioxide doesn't do anything to you directly—a clean-burning engine used to be defined as one that released only CO₂ and water vapor—but in sufficient quantity it melts the ice caps, converts grassland into desert, and turns every coastal city into New Orleans.

There's waste that comes from doing something that manifestly doesn't need doing. A hundred million trees are cut every year just to satisfy the junk-mail industry. You can argue about cutting trees for newspapers, or magazines, or Bibles, or symphony scores—but the cascade of stuffporn that arrives daily in our mailboxes? It wastes forests, and also our time. Which, actually, is precious—we each get about 30,000 days, and it makes one a little sick to calculate how many of them have been spent opening credit card offers.

Or think about what we've done with cars. From 1975 to 1985, fuel efficiency for the average new car improved from 14 to 28 miles per gallon. Then we stopped worrying about oil and put all that engineering talent to work on torque. In the mid-1980s, the typical car accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 14.5 seconds. Today's average (even though vehicles are much heavier) is 9.5 seconds. But it's barely legal to accelerate like that, and it makes you look like an idiot, or a teenager.

Then there's the waste that comes with doing something maybe perhaps vaguely useful when you could be doing something actually useful instead. For instance: Congress is being lobbied really, really hard to fork over billions of dollars to the nuclear industry, on the premise that it will fight global warming. There is, of course, that little matter of nuclear waste—but lay that aside (in Nevada or someplace). The greater problem is the wasted opportunity: That money could go to improving efficiency, which can produce the same carbon reductions for about a fifth of the price.

Our wasteful habits wouldn't matter much if there were just a few of us—a Neanderthal hunting band could have discarded six plastic water bottles apiece every day with no real effect except someday puzzling anthropologists. But the volumes we manage are something else. Chris Jordan is the photographer laureate of waste—his most recent project, "Running the Numbers," uses exquisite images to show the 106,000 aluminum cans Americans toss every 30 seconds, or the 1 million plastic cups distributed on US airline flights every 6 hours, or the 2 million plastic beverage bottles we run through every 5 minutes, or the 426,000 cell phones we discard every day, or the 1.14 million brown paper supermarket bags we use each hour, or the 60,000 plastic bags we use every 5 seconds, or the 15 million sheets of office paper we use every 5 minutes, or the 170,000 Energizer batteries produced every 15 minutes. The simple amount of stuff it takes—energy especially—to manage this kind of throughput makes it daunting to even think about our waste problem. (Meanwhile, the next time someone tells you that population is at the root of our troubles, remind them that the average American uses more energy between the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve and dinner on January 2 than the average, say, Tanzanian consumes in a year. Population matters, but it really matters when you multiply it by proximity to Costco.)

Would you like me to go on? Americans discard enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet every three months—and aluminum represents less than 1 percent of our solid waste stream. We toss 14 percent of the food we buy at the store. More than 46,000 pieces of plastic debris float on each square mile of ocean. And—oh, forget it.

These kinds of numbers get in the way of figuring out how much we really waste. In recent years, for instance, 40 percent of Harvard graduates have gone into finance, consulting, and business. They had just spent four years with the world's greatest library, some of its finest museum collections, an unparalleled assemblage of Nobel-quality scholars, and all they wanted to do was go to lower Manhattan and stare into computer screens. What a waste! And when they got to Wall Street, of course, they figured out extravagant ways to waste the life savings of millions of Americans, which in turn required the waste of taxpayer dollars to bail them out, money that could have been spent on completely useful things: trains to get us where we want to go—say, new national parks.

Perhaps the only kind of waste we've gotten good at cutting is the kind we least needed to eliminate: An entire industry of consultants survives on telling companies how to get rid of inefficiencies—which generally means people. And an entire class of politicians survives by railing about government waste, which also ends up meaning programs for people: Health care for poor children, what a boondoggle.

Want to talk about government waste? We're going to end up spending north of a trillion dollars on the war in Iraq, which will go down as one of the larger wastes of money—and lives—in our history. But we spend more than half a trillion a year on the military anyway, more than the next 10 nations combined. That almost defines profligacy.

We've gotten away with all of this for a long time because we had margin, all kinds of margin. Money, for sure—we were the richest nation on Earth, and when we wanted more we just borrowed it from China. But margin in other ways as well: We landed on a continent with topsoil more than a foot thick across its vast interior, so the fact that we immediately started to waste it with inefficient plowing hardly mattered. We inherited an atmosphere that could buffer our emissions for the first 150 years of the Industrial Revolution. We somehow got away with wasting the talents of black people and women and gay folks.

But our margin is gone. We're out of cash, we're out of atmosphere, we're out of luck. The current economic carnage is what happens when you waste—when the CEO of Merrill Lynch thinks he needs a $35,000 commode, when the CEO of Tyco thinks it would be fun to spend a million dollars on his wife's birthday party, complete with an ice sculpture of Michelangelo's David peeing vodka. The melted Arctic ice cap is what you get when everyone in America thinks he requires the kind of vehicle that might make sense for a forest ranger.

Getting out of the fix we're in—if it's still possible—requires in part that we relearn some very old lessons. We were once famously thrifty: Yankee frugality, straightening bent nails, saving string. We used to have a holiday, Thrift Week, which began on Ben Franklin's birthday: "Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship," said he. We disapproved of frippery, couldn't imagine wasting money on ourselves, made do or did without. It took a mighty effort to make us what we are today—in fact, it took a mighty industry, advertising, which soaks up plenty more of those Harvard grads and represents an almost total waste.

In the end, we built an economy that depended on waste, and boundless waste is what it has produced. And the really sad part is, it felt that way, too. Making enough money to build houses with rooms we never used, and cars with engines we had no need of, meant wasting endless hours at work. Which meant that we had, on average, one-third fewer friends than our parents' generation. What waste that! "Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers," wrote Wordsworth. We can't say we weren't warned.

The economic mess now transfixing us will mean some kind of change. We can try to hang on to the status quo—living a Wal-Mart life so we can buy cheaply enough to keep the stream of stuff coming. Or we can say uncle. There are all kinds of experiments in postwaste living springing up: Freecycling, and Craigslisting, and dumpster diving, and car sharing (those unoccupied seats in your vehicle—what a waste!), and open sourcing. We're sharing buses, and going to the library in greater numbers. Economists keep hoping we'll figure out a way to revert—that we'll waste a little more, and pull us out of the economic doldrums. But the psychological tide suddenly runs the other way.

We may have waited too long—we may have wasted our last good chance. It's possible the planet will keep warming and the economy keep sinking no matter what. But perhaps not—and we seem ready to shoot for something nobler than the hyperconsumerism that's wasted so much of the last few decades. Barack Obama said he would "call out" the nation's mayors if they wasted their stimulus money. That's the mood we're in, and it's about time.

色々なシステムの最近の崩壊から思われる多くの成り行きからハッキリしている事の一つに地球規模の食料不足があります。以前にガーデニングなど考えた事もない人さえ少なくとも小規模ながらも食べ物を育てる技術を学ぶには今はいい時です。

今年はグリーンハウスで野菜、ハーブ等を育てる実験をするつもりですーーーグリーンハウス、ここ日本ではビニールハウスと呼ばれているものです。持続的にチェックしたり電気も使わず自動的に給水する低メンテナンスの技術を見つけました。

グリーンハウスでこの様な分野を探求するのに来て一緒に実験をしたい人達を招きます。音楽を聞きながら日中働いて夕方よく食べて憩って。宿泊、食事は仕事と代償か時間で現金とのコンビネーションで払えます。

Of the many consequences to be expected from the current collapse of various systems, one of the more obvious is global food shortages.  Now is a good time even for people who have not thought before about gardening to consider at least learning techniques of growing food on a local scale.

This year at The Greenhouse we intend to experiment with growing vegetables and herbs in ...well, greenhouses,  or vinyl houses, as they are called in Japan.  We have discovered some new technology that will allow creating thriving low-maintenance greenhouses automatically watered without constant checking or electricity.

We are inviting people who would like to experiment and learn along with us to come and spend time at The Greenhouse exploring these areas.  Working during the day (with music),  eating well (with music(  and hanging out in the evenings (with music).   Accommodation, food and facilities will be payable with work, or with a combination of hours and cash

It's certainly pleasant to sit upstairs in The Greenhouse and listen to the rain on the roof. Sometimes it's a　drop here and there, perhaps falling off the overhanging trees. At times it patters softly, punctuating the music with ambient randomness, and at others it drums steadily. And then from time to time the sun comes out and mist rises , exposing the soft greens of the hills.

グリーンハウスの2階の部屋で座って、屋根に落ちる雨の音を聞くのが楽しいです。時々屋根にしだれる木の枝から落下する雨滴が聞こえる。時々しなやかな雨垂れの音が音楽をランダムでアンビエントに刺したり、また、時々安定したドラムのようなリズムを叩いたりする。また、時々太陽が出て、霧が山の上へ浮かび、山の柔らかい緑色が見えてくる。

It's a great place to be when it rains, and I'm imagining it might be raining this weekend as well. I know some friends will be going to outdoor dance parties during the long weekend, but those of you who would enjoy a few shanti days in the dry comfort of The Greenhouse, I renew the invitation to come and hang out at the free party, enjoying what's made in the music room and the kitchen, and strolling in the outdoors when the weather is dry. We'll be chilling out here through Sunday evening, so come late if you can't come early!

昔々、20世紀に、ほとんどケンブリッジで知り合った詩人、画家、音楽家と、ええと、哲学者の何人かがロンドンに引越し、クロムウェルロードの101番の建物に住むようになりました。そこで間もなく、ティモシー・リアリのＬＳＤ実験にかかわっていたマイケル・ホリングスヘッドという人がアメリカから渡ってきました。間もなく、101番はアシッド・ヘッドの集合場所となり、その後ピンク・フロイドのメンバーとなった人もいました。その時期に親友であるNigel Lesmoir-Gordonがこの短い映画を作製し、映画について次のコメントをしています。

「1966年にロンドンで映画学校を通っていた時、常に8ｍｍのカメラを持ち歩き、面白い場面に出会えたら、撮影していました。夏休みにケンブリッジで友達を訪ねたとき、アシッド数人分を持って、友達と一緒にトリップしようと思いました。子供のころによく遊んでいたケンブリッジの近くのローマン・ウッヅの白亜坑にトリップすることにしました。アシッドを食べて、決まった瞬間に私が撮影をし始めました。どうしてかわからないが、そのときにシッド・バレットに注目し、彼がその日の映画のメインキャラクターになりました。

Once upon a time in the 20th century, a number of poets, painters, musicians and...umm.. philosophers, most of whom had known each other at Cambridge, moved to London and all lived on several floors of 101 Cromwell Road. Before long, a guy named Michael Hollingshead arrived from the US, where he had been involved with Timothy Leary in his experiments with LSD. Before long, 101 became a major center of acidheads, among whom were several of the people who soon formed Pink Floyd. It was at this time that my good friend Nigel Lesmoir-Gordon made this short film, about which he offers this comment:

"When I was at film school in London in 1966 I used to take an 8mm camera with me everywhere and if there was anything worth filming, I shot it.

I was visiting friends in Cambridge in the Summer and I had taken several LSD trips with me to share with them all. We decided to trip at our old childhood haunt in the chalk pits at the Roman Woods in the Gog Magog Hills just east of Cambridge. We took the acid and as soon as it kicked in I started filming and, for some reason, which I cannot remember now, I focused in on Syd Barrett and let him become the subject of my film that day.

The film as it is viewable now is still as I shot it in the camera in 1966. Pure. The material has never been edited. It works well as it is and has a Barrett-like childish innocence about it, which I really like."

Nigel can be seen in the latter half of the film, shot at 101. He's the guy with no shirt on the balcony.

The shower's parent comet, 55P/Tempel-Tuttle had returned to its perihelion in 1998, should mean 2006 will see a continuing decline in activity. However, in 2003 and 2004 activity was slightly above the background level with ZHRs of 60 and 28 respectively.

No matter, the coming shower will surely send some sky watchers home with life-long memories. "I'll never forget the night of Nov 19th," they might recall years from now -- One thing is certain: if you stay indoors you won't see anything!

In the fifty years since we joined the land, we've seen much happiness, and much sadness.

Most of the rest of the world has crumbled into insurrection and resource wars. The recessions of 2006, 2011, and 2015 were interspersed by wildly optimistic growth, which only used up the fuel even faster. Then the big one hit in late 2019, when the stock market lost 2/3rds of its value, and fully half of employed people in the US and Canada lost their jobs.

Europe and Japan fared somewhat better, but they and China were dragged down by the huge loss of market in North America. Half the people were no longer able to buy cheap plastic crap from 20,000 kilometers away, and the other half were terrified to let go of their money, too-late saving for a future that had been uncertain for far longer than they had imagined.

Then came the Chinese invasion. Although it was not a "traditional" invasion, in the form of tanks and bombs, it was no less deadly, and did involve an army of sorts. China held countless trillions of dollars of US debt, and simply called in the notes in the form of real estate purchases after the land price collapse that came with the 2019 depression. The Chinese government filled empty cargo ships with their poor, underprivileged, and politically incorrect, and shipped them off to work the huge collective farms that they had purchased in the US, sending the food back to feed an increasingly unhappy and politically unstable middle class. Americans reacted with violence, killing hundreds of thousands of landed Chinese in random acts of violence, and by 2023, the Chinese immigrants had armed themselves, and began retribution.

But people were hungry in America, too. The television networks and news outlets had largely placated the US middle class, through losing an entire generation to resource wars, and losing their personal liberties to "protection from terrorism". But hunger was another matter, and it required a more powerful response from the moneyed classes.

No one can say for sure how it happened, or who was responsible -- all those who might have had a story to tell are either in prison, or have been executed. But the nuclear holocaust at the Super Bowl gave the neo-cons all that they needed to impose totalitarian martial law. The people are still hungry, but at least they're safe from terrorism from abroad -- if no longer safe from terrorism from within.

The historians and economists looked backwards, and noted that it took ten years before there was much recovery from the 1929 Depression, but the waited-for recovery never took place, and by 2039, over 1/3rd of the North American population had succumbed to insurrection, starvation, exposure, or disease. The Chinese Flu pandemic of 2036 was particularly gruesome, taking nearly 80% of those infected -- nearly a quarter billion perishing world-wide -- and making the flu pandemic of 1918 look like a bad case of sniffles in comparison.

The natural gas rationing that had begun a decade before now meant that only the very rich had winter heat in much of North America's urban areas. The cities emptied onto the land like a swarm of locusts, cutting down anything they could burn for heat. It was said that there was not a single tree standing within 50 miles of New York City.

But we'll never really know how many died, nor how many are dying, because during these dark times, the infrastructure of the world began to crumble. Rolling blackouts became a permanent fixture throughout most of the world lucky enough to still have electricity. What was left of the transportation industry crawled to a stop as long-distance highways became impassible. The last commercial airline flight landed in 2032. The telephone system, utterly dependent on reliable electricity, fractured into regional systems. And the Internet, once viewed as the hope for civilization, devolved into regional internets, with some intercontinental email traffic getting through on a sporadic basis.

Large countries, unwillingly led by the US, Russia, and China, began to split into rival regions. Internecine warfare broke out between Southern and Northern Calfornia, New England and the Midwest, and most of all, between the not-quite-poor and the newly poor. This last conflict became especially deadly, and the rich supplied both sides with plenty of handguns and small arms, stoking the fires of class warfare while retreating into increasingly isolated bunkers and fortresses.

By the early '40's, feudalism returned with a vengeance. Anyone who survived the property crash of 2019 could hire armies of starving laborers for a pittance. Anyone who had mortgages in 2019 lost their land in the next few years. The US Supreme Court gave its blessing to indentured servitude way back in 2022, Chief Justice Roberts wryly noting, "at least they're not slaves." (In a lone dissenting opinion, Justice Alieto argued that the court did not go far enough; many of the founding fathers owned slaves, and therefore, slavery actually was constitutional.)

Debtors' prisons, not seen since Dickensonian England, returned for a while, since all the for-profit prisons built between 1992 and 2008 were emptied by disease. The US began forced conscription from the prison population in 2023, and a docile public said, "it's either them, or us" and acquiesced. The best anyone in the habit of maxed-out credit card debt in the early century could hope for by mid-century was three meals and a place to sleep in exchange for work -- they could see those who were unable to work being loaded into trains on the way to the biofuel plants.

But also in the '40's, there was a pause, and the world appeared to try to catch its breath. The growing ecovillage movement meshed nicely with the collapse of large countries into regions. Communities of "freemen" used the laws that kept the rich in power to keep themselves out of bondage -- and supplied with healthy food and natural health care remedies. In 2042, the Free State of Cascadia declared independence from what was left of the US and Canadian governments, and held its first constitutional convention in Vancouver.
Canada

With the broad passage of "Single Transferrable Voting" systems in all provinces except Alberta, the Green party began to flourish, and Canadians actually implemented not only the Kyoto Protocol, but the 2016 Hague Protocol that finally did away with fossil fuel subsidies, replacing them with renewable energy credits.

Boosted by energy exports to the south and decreasing national debt, the Canadian and US Dollars reached parity way back in 2006, and never looked back. Canada re-instated the gold standard in 2019, and by 2039, you could buy a truckload of US $100,000 notes for a single Maple Leaf coin -- not that anyone in their right mind would want to.

So used to following the US lead on many fronts, Canadians revolted and began valuing their cultural heritage. You no longer had to "go south" to get respect at home, in fact, those who crossed over to try to make a quick buck were greeted with derision upon return.

Although the Liberals tried to gut the health care system in the first decade of the century, it had been restored by the time the pandemics hit North America, and Canada (second to Norway again, damn it!) had among the world's lowest death rate.

Quebec finally seceded during the 2020 Depression, and the Maritimes and the Prairies followed, forming a loose federation of independent states, still known as "Canada", but no longer sending much money to Ottawa.

The annexation of 2039 was more a joke that anything serious. The US immediately seized the Alberta energy resources, and were able to draft a few thousand young people from Toronto to send off to resource wars in the Middle East. But the reach of the once mighty empire had become limited, following the collapse of communication and transportation infrastructure; they could still wage war across the planet, but the US could no longer count draft-aged men in Moose Jaw -- nor those on Salt Spring Island.

Winter Solstice

There comes a point when the relentless march of the sunrise and the sunset stops and after 2 or 3 days the sun starts moving back along the horizon.

That point is called the solstice. The word means literally 'the sun stands still.' That's what Stonehenge was built to celebrate. The shamans of the day would have called the most important community leaders to a ritual to celebrate the continuing cycles of nature.

Fireworks After-Party Dec 3-4

The fireworks display at the Chichibu Night Festival on Dec 3 of every year is one of the most spectacular in the world. For several hours, incredibly orchestrated fireworks light up the sky, providing a natural psychedelic high that must be experienced to be believed. Thousands of people travel out from Tokyo to see it, even when it occurs in the middle of a week.

This year, for the first time I can remember, Dec 3 is a Saturday, so attendance should be high. We have decided to hold a Hanabi Afterparty at The Greenhouse next weekend.

Here's the plan:

At the top of one of the narrow roads lined with yatai there is a small temple just below the hill from which the fireworks are launched. The priest is very friendly, and always has a log fire burning in the temple grounds, so even if it is cold, one can quite comfortably sit around the bonfire and view the display.

We will meet at the temple, and after the fireworks display, which runs from about 7:30 until 10 or so, we will return to the Greenhouse for a musical gathering, extending until Sunday evening, so bring your instruments and your ears... We will have two vans, so can transport quite a few people who come to Chichibu by train. We hope some of you will bring vehicles as well to assist in getting everybody to The Greenhouse. We will arrange transport from The Greenhouse to the nearby bus terminal for people returning by bus/train on Sunday.

COSTS: Instead of charging any admission to The Greenhouse, we will simply ask for contributions when you leave. Food will be available a la carte -- tasty snacks in the evening, and breakfast/brunch in the morning. Dinner on Sunday will also be possible.

ACCESS: Seibu-Ikebukuro Line from Ikebukuro Station to Seibu-Chichibu Station (about 750 yen, or a bit over 1000 yen if you take the Red Arrow Superexpress). It is about a ten minute walk from the station to the temple.

１２月３日の秩父夜祭りの花火は世界でも壮観の一つです。数時間非常に編曲された花火が経験したものでないとわからないナチュラルハイで夜空に輝きます。　　　　　　　　　　
何千人もの人が週末でもない時にでも東京から見に来ます。今年は覚えている限りでは初めて土曜日なので参加者も多いでしょう。週末グリーンハウスで花火アフターパーテイーをする事にしました。　　　　　　　　　

プランはーー

屋台が並んでいる狭い道路のうえの所、花火が発火される丘の下の所に小さい寺があります（地図を見よ）。住職は親切でいつも庭で丸太が燃えてるので寒くてもたきぎの廻りに気持ちよく座って花火が見えます。

　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
７時半～１０時位、花火の後お寺で会いグリーンハウスへ行き日曜日の夕方頃まで音楽のギャザリングなので楽器、耳を持って来て下さい。車二台あるので電車で来る人を乗せる事が出来ます。何人かは車で来てそして皆をグリーンハウスへと手伝ってくれるのを望みます。日曜日に帰る人を近くのバス停まで送ります。

A casual observer might not even notice the eclipse; but if you know what to look for, you'll definitely see it.

It was Joi Ito who introduced me to my first techno party, shortly after I had introduced him to Tim Leary, back in 1989. For a while we were the Japanese editors of MONDO 2000 magazine. These days, His weblog is one of the most-read in the Blogosphere. Here are excerpts from an op-ed piece he's just written for the NY Times:

An Anniversary to Forget

WHEN people ask my thoughts on the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, I always feel uncomfortable. As a Japanese, I know how I'm supposed to respond: with sadness, regret and perhaps anger. But invariably I try to dodge the issue, or to reply as neutrally as possible.

That's because, at bottom, the bombings don't really matter to me or, for that matter, to most Japanese of my generation. My peers and I have little hatred or blame in our hearts for the Americans; the horrors of that war and its nuclear evils feel distant, even foreign. Instead, the bombs are simply the flashpoint marking the discontinuity that characterized the cultural world we grew up in...

...To be sure, the memory of Hiroshima and Nagasaki still plays a part in the imagery of popular culture. But more meaningful references to Japan's nuclear past, like those in the story of Godzilla (awakened from his slumber by American atomic tests) or the cartoonist Keiji Nakazawa's best-selling series about a Hiroshima survivor, have morphed into the cultural equivalent of elevator music.

Indeed, Japanese culture is unusual (although by no means unique) in its ability to take shocks or disturbances and gradually transform and neuter them. In that respect, today's atomic imagery in pop culture is not so different from the mohawked punks who apologize profusely if they bump into you in downtown Tokyo: the T-shirts they wear with violent, antisocial slogans (in English) are an aesthetic statement, not a moral one.

For my generation, the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and the war in general now represent the equivalent of a cultural "game over" or "reset" button. Through a combination of conscious policy and unconscious culture, the painful memories and images of the war have lost their context, surfacing only as twisted echoes in our subculture. The result, for better and worse, is that, 60 years after Hiroshima, we dwell more on the future than the past.

例えば御盆の週末をフルオンのダンスパーティなどで過ごされたりする場合、残りの休日を、グリーンハウスの思索的な環境の中で過ごし、サイチルやライブのエスノアンビエントを聴いたり、美味しいものを食べたり、近くの湖で泳いだり、地元の温泉を訪ねたり、などといった風にお過ごしになるのはいかがでしょうか。

今年の御盆は私にとって特別の意味があります。

御盆は親族の魂がこの世の出身地を訪れる機会であり、多くの皆さんも会った事がある私の娘の楽妥が２年来の訪問で、心身共に出席する事になります。

これは楽妥の友達の皆さんが音楽と美味しい食事を楽しみながら一緒に過ごすのに最適の機会です。しかしブライベートのパーティーではないので、楽妥と会った事がないからといって遠慮する必要はありません。他にもアースリングズが大勢参加している事でしょう。

音楽はDJやライブ演奏者を含めたフリースタイルで、即興ジャム共演の機会も十分あります。ミュージシャン、VJまたは他のアーチストでパフォーマンス参加するのに興味がある方は、事前に私に連絡を下されば報酬についてお話し合いが出来ます。

Once again there will be an EarthlingZ Gathering at The Greenhouse during the Obon holidays.

Since there are many other events during the weekend of 12-14 August, we will be expecting more people to attend during the holidays following the weekend, from 14-17 August.

If you will be spending the O-bon weekend at a full-on dance party, what could be better than to spend the rest of the holidays in the contemplative atmosphere of The Greenhouse, listening to psychill and live ethno-ambient, eating delicious food, and perhaps going swimming at the nearby lake or visiting one of the local onsens?.

This year Obon has special significance for me. It is the occasion when one expects the spirits of relatives to visit their earthly places of origin, and my daughter Radha, whom many of you have met, will be here for her first visit in two years, in body as well as spirit. This will be a good occasion for all of her friends to come and meet with her again, while enjoying the music and tasty food we plan to make available. But it is not a private party, so don't stay away simply if you don't know Radha. There should be many other EarthlingZ here.

The music will be freeform, with DJs and live musicians, and opportunities for spontaneous jamming.If you are a musician, VJ or other kind of artist interested in attending and performing, please contact me beforehand, and we can discuss compensation.

The entry fee will be 1500 yen for as many days as you choose to stay,and you will be asked to buy 2500 yen's worth of EarthlingZ money to be used to pay for food and beverages. As it is mainly food sales that make the income needed to cover Greenhouse costs, we must ask that you not bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. As The Greenhouse is a no-alcohol zone, we also ask that if you do bring beer or other alcoholic beverages, that you consume them outside or in The Whitehouse (the other building we have next door). There will be other non-alcoholic beverages available in the kitchen, which will operate in cafeteria style.

Read an article in The New Yorker about how recording has transformed music over the last 100 years. It’s written by a classical music guy (Alex Ross) so it comes from that POV, but he does widen his discussion to include John Cage and Chuck D.

The writer says John Phillip Sousa thought that recording would be the death of music. Well, of live performance was what Sousa meant. To some extent I think he was right, but not entirely. He was right in that people now often think of music as something you buy, that you possess and consume — rather than something you experience and possibly even make yourself. Even live shows are sometimes thought of as something you consume — certainly they are something done by professionals. To a large extent what is desired in a live shows is weighed against recordings, not just the recordings of that material, but recordings in general. Audiences have come to expect that a live performance will be a reproduction of a recording they are familiar with, but with a kind of visual enhancement. And a bit louder that your home stereo, too.

Much of the article is about aesthetic changes that recording brought about — the increased use of vibrato by singers and strings (it hides pitch issues and records “better”,) increased and obsessive precision (performances used to be sloppier, more haphazard — more real?) and new vocal techniques (Bing Crosby’s whole intimate singing style was based on using a microphone, the writer claims, and all singers have followed his example to some degree.) He also mentions something that is often forgotten, that most recordings have labored long and hard to create the illusion that the orchestra or band were playing together, that the music was not created in a studio, but was a live performance, merely captured. This fake fidelity is obvious in classical recordings where maintaining the integrity of this illusion is paramount, but it applies to a lot of pop music too.

Of course, famously The Beatles and others at that time (the Grateful Dead album Anthem of The Sun was completely created in editing,) and now all of Electro, Electronic, Hip Hop and other genres have all abandoned the need to create this illusion — the sounds are, obviously to my ears, clearly not “played”, not by any known instrument, and are virtually impossible to reproduce live (though bands still try.) Drums on contemporary tunes are mutated squawks, samples and electronic sounds all mixed together, and the “instruments” occupy a host of imaginary spaces (you can tell they were not played at the same time in the same room) and often everything is in your face, sharp, clear, hard-edged. There’s nothing naturalistic about it. Hasn’t been for years. In fact, sometimes there’s an obvious pride in creating something that is profoundly un-naturalistic, completely artificial sounding.

Sometimes the recording medium itself becomes the instrument. Paul Hindemith, the German composer, did performances using phonographs as instruments in 1927! That predates John Cage by a few decades and DJs by even more. But as an instrument vinyl is limited, there are a few amazing virtuosos, but sampling has made that virtuosity irrelevant — anyone with a laptop can loop a beat now, perfectly, and then layer other sounds on top and add a vocal. In one sense this created over the years a disconnect between playing an instrument and the results, but in another sense it makes everyone a potential composer — not merely a player — anyone can now hear their composition “played”, without having to have had music lessons or hiring expensive players.

What does that mean for music?

For one thing it means there’s a lot more of it.

Music is now everywhere. It’s not a special event to hear music as it once was. It’s a constant background, sometimes anyway, like air. Sometimes smelly, sometimes hot, sometimes fresh and clean. You like it, maybe you need it, but you also can’t escape it.

One can not only hear the music one chooses all the time if one wants, which seems like a good thing, but one can also seek out music from far-flung places, scenes and from times very different than one's own. At least in recorded form it’s more or less all out there.

I find this overwhelming. Probably as a musician I find music either one or the other — completely invisible, inaudible — even sometimes when it’s playing loud — or completely intrusive — impossible to ignore. As a musician there are times when even quiet background music in a bar or restaurant is completely distracting and impossible to ignore. It’s like the effect of having a TV on in room is for most people — it tends to demand attention. All conversation either stops or has to deal with the TV program. Music is like that for musicians.

In this way the easy access to and ubiquity of music is oppressive. It often feels like a passive aggressive assault. I’d pay extra for silence.

I don’t think fewer people go to live shows as Sousa and others have suggested. Not where I live. Not significantly anyway. The social and communal aspect of listening to music outweighs any negative aspects of the poor sound and imperfect reproduction at most live shows. It’s about being with other people, relaxing, feeling a common bond. Of course we all try and do our best as performers to overcome sound reproduction problems and make the music sounds good, it is a constant issue, but maybe it’s not as important as we think it is.

On another level I am aware that I am always walking a tightrope when performing — referring to a known recording in the way in which a song is played, but I don’t obsess over it too much. And whenever possible I try to take that internalized version, the recorded version in our heads, merely as a starting point. But I’m comfortable with all that because I’ve always been a performer. Others, especially those who created their music on a laptop or in a studio and have never stepped on a stage before, seem to feel a weird obligation to perform, and though some of them may be great at it, others should never try. In fact, for some performing does more harm than good — they’d be better off staying in the studio making more music. Sometimes their recorded music is so good and innovative you wonder why they think they have to be a performer too. They don’t. Maybe their record companies tell them they have to get out there and promote their record and that’s the way to do it. For some it’s not.

That’s one way music has changed. There are some styles that purely exist as recordings, that IS the music. These recordings are not a performance of something written, in fact most often there never was anything written. It is not a version, one possible interpretation out of many, of a song or composition, it is the ONLY possible version of that particular piece of music. Most dance club music is like that, as is hip hop. Other pop and even classical music is actually like that too, but it pretends not to be.

That is a new way of making music that Sousa could never have imagined. A new branch has been added to the tree. But he might be right that playing an instrument yourself, for your own enjoyment or maybe for that of a small group of friends, is disappearing. This branch is withering, but it still thrives in Brazil, among Texas songwriters, flamenco musicians, gypsies and even in the mutated form of karaoke bars. Most people expect pre-recorded music or a DJ at a house party. On special occasions someone might hire a band, but few think of actually doing it themselves, except in the abovementioned cases. It wouldn’t be “good enough.”

Well, that depends on your point of view.

Record collectors and consumers often view music as something that is inseparable from the object on which it resides. But if the digital world has taught us anything, it is that the musical information on CDs is anything but inseparable. The two things come apart quite easily, making the value of the delivery object fairly questionable.

So when music as a product, as a consumable object, is subverted and undermined by technology and by its own success, then maybe we have come full circle. Maybe if music is no longer seen as an object, but as pure information, data, sound waves, then the object becomes at best a mere delivery device, and we’re back to viewing music as an experience, albeit still one that other people produce.

What then becomes valuable in many cases is what music means to people — beyond the actual recording. Part of this meaning is in the song (or whatever) — and not necessarily in the specific recording of it. What it expresses, how it moves people, the worldview and ethos it embodies. Many of these qualities can be in the composition and exist apart from the recording and interpretation of that composition. People like "The Rite Of Spring" but are not everyone is super fussy about which recording they are hearing. Well, some are, but you get my point.

The other part of what music means is embodied in the singer, the band or the composer. It’s not even in the music and can’t be recorded, at some of it can’t. For some of this music the actual musical and lyrical content is almost irrelevant. For some pieces of music what it’s about is the relationship, the connection to, the singer, with their style, attitude, behavior, beliefs and looks more so than with the music, which is more or less relegated in this case to being the soundtrack to the lifestyle and philosophy. At best the music and everything else surrounding it — the videos, the gossip, the reputation, present a common front, a gesamtkunstwerk type piece that embodies what matters to a person.

Both of these meanings and identities are pretty had to brand and to market, though companies try. Marketing a band or a singer as a brand is common, but it’s time consuming, labor intensive, expensive and risky. If the talent betrays their fans the deal is off and the music becomes worthless. People get older, they change, they die. The talent and the audience. So the star system can simplifies things, making branding and marketing easy, but the available resources are limited — until cloning, that is.

With classical music we identify with the composition more than with a specific recording, at least most of the time. And with pop standards this has more or less become true too. There are so many versions of some standard pop songs that everyone has their own favorite interpretation, and no one recording is THE version. But that was before recording and music making abandoned the abovementioned idea of faking ambience and performance. Hard to imagine a different version of a Missy Elliot song, other than a remix.

So Sousa was right, in some respects — people making music for themselves and their friends is now rare, at least for most people. People are now timid and afraid to make it, or at least to play it themselves. They can’t compare to the recorded sounds and mixes that everyone has become used to. But I suspect that will change. The social aspect will lead to new forms — to troubadours and poets who aren’t afraid of sounding occasionally unprofessional, to more ergonomic interfaces with laptops, and to the unheard and untrained meeting with high-tech virtuosity.

Improve CDs by freezing

-Take a cd and put it in a freezer bag. Place the bag in your freezer for at
least five hours. (preferably overnight) Take the bag out of the
freezer and place it in your refrigerator for five to six hours. Then
take the bag and place it in a cool area for another five to six hours.
Repeat process twice. When transferring bag to refridgerator, place it
inside a folded towel to help slow the thawing process. Transfer the
bag to the cool area inside the towel.-

'The theory is freezing the cds and slowly thawing them reverses internal
damage done to the cd at the pressing plant by the high heat inherent
in the process. After freezing a few of my cds I noticed that there is
greater definition between the instruments and that the high
frequencies were sharper. Vocals were also sharper; perhaps due to the
clarity of the high frequencies.
